Poor Not CursedJohn 9:3

The Tone He Prayed It In

This message is for the tone somebody prayed a blessing over me in, the one that meant something is wrong with you

It was in the hall afterwards, by the trestle table with the urn on it.

You know the room. Strip lights, a stack of chairs against the far wall, that carpet tile smell, the biscuits on a plate with a bit of kitchen roll under them. You had a cup of tea you did not particularly want because holding something gives your hands a job.

And he came over, and he was kind. That is the thing you keep having to explain to yourself. He was genuinely kind. He asked how things were and you gave him about a third of the truth, because a third is what you give in a hall, and he did the thing where he put a hand out and asked if he could pray.

And you said yes, because what else do you say.

He prayed a blessing over you. Every word of it was right. Blessing, provision, favor, the whole thing, and he meant it, and there is nothing in what he said that you could write down and object to.

It was the tone.

Because the tone was the tone people use over a situation that has gone wrong. That gentle, slightly lowered, careful voice. The voice you use at a hospital bedside. There was something in it that was not asking God for something so much as apologizing to Him about you, and when he said amen he squeezed your shoulder and did a small sad smile, and then he went and got a biscuit.

You stood there with your tea.

And the sentence that arrived in you was not about him at all, and you have not been able to get rid of it since, and it goes like this.

Everybody here thinks this is a judgement on me.

Not spoken. Nobody in that hall would ever say it out loud, and most of them have never thought it in words. But it is in the tone, and you have been hearing it in the tone for about two years now, in the way people ask how you are getting on, in the pause before they change the subject, in the extra warmth that has a bit of pity folded into it like a note in a card.

And the worst of it, the part you would not say to anybody, is that some of it has got inside.

You are doing the arithmetic in the shop again, the one where you know the total before you get to the till because you have been adding it up down the aisle. And now there is a second calculation running underneath it, and it is not about the shopping at all.

It is: what is wrong with me, that this is my life.

Somebody asked that question in front of Jesus

I want to take you to a road, and to a conversation that happened over the head of a man who could hear every word of it.

He was born blind. He was sitting where he always sat. And a group of religious men walked past with Jesus and looked at him and asked the question that every generation asks about anybody whose life is hard.

"Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"John 9:2

Read it again and see what they had already decided.

They were not asking whether his condition was a verdict. That part was settled in their minds before they opened their mouths. The only thing left to work out was whose fault, and they were happy to do it out loud in front of him, in the road, as a theological exercise, while he sat there.

You have been sat in that road.

Now hear the answer, and notice that Jesus does not soften it or nuance it or agree with a little bit of it first.

Jesus answered, "It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him."John 9:3

It was not.

Three words, and He does not hedge them. He does not say it is complicated. He does not say let us not speculate. He takes the entire framework off the table, in public, in front of the man it had been sitting on top of for his whole life.

Beloved, I want to do the same thing now, plainly, with no however on the end of it.

Your lack is not a verdict.

It is not a judgement. It is not a discipline. It is not a test God set you, it is not a consequence of a wrong turn you cannot identify, and it is not a report on how much faith you have got. It is not God being disappointed in you and expressing it through your circumstances.

Say it again to yourself, because the tone in that hall has had two years of repetition and this has had about nine seconds.

It is not a verdict.

And I am not going to tell you that being poor is beautiful, or that it is somehow holier, or that God wants you kept here. I will not do that to you. Anybody who romanticises this has not done the arithmetic in the aisle. Wanting more than this is not a lack of contentment, it is sense, and getting help, getting work, getting whatever you are entitled to and whatever is genuinely there for you, is good and right and nobody in heaven thinks less of you for reaching for it.

But none of that is tonight's business.

Tonight is about a sentence somebody put inside you with a tone of voice, and we are going to take it out.

The breakthrough

So here is what happens now, and it has nothing to do with your situation changing.

I am not going to promise you anything about your circumstances tonight. Not one thing. God does what God does and He is good, and I am not going to hang a heavy hope on you that I have no right to hang.

What is going to change tonight is what you believe is being said about you.

Because a verdict is a sentence passed by a court that had the authority to pass it, and there is no such court and no such sentence, and the man on that road had the whole thing lifted off him in one line by the only Person entitled to speak.

You are going to hear the same line over your own name.

And two ordinary things before we do, because they belong in the same room as this.

If there is help that exists for your situation, go and get it, and do it without one gram of shame. That is not a lack of trust in God. A door He opened is still a door He opened when it has a form to fill in.

And if it has got heavy enough that part of you has stopped wanting to be here, tell a living person tonight. In the United States you can call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local crisis line or emergency number, and if you do not know it, ask someone to find it with you. Shame is a liar about how alone you are.

Declare this over yourself

Speak these over your own name. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing is not adjusted by anything in your situation; the authority in these words is His, delegated to you, and carried in His Name. And however He answers about the rest of it, and the rest of it is His to answer in His own way, what is settled tonight is what is true about you.

  1. Verdict, get off my life, because you were never passed and no court ever sat. Jesus said plainly that it was not this man who sinned, nor his parents, so what I am living in is not a judgement on me, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Tone in that hall, you are not a blessing and you have no authority in this house. God is my Father and He is not disappointed in me, and I am loved exactly where I am standing tonight.
  3. Lord, You see the whole of my week and every number I am carrying, and I thank You that You have never once read them as a report on my faith. I am Yours and I am not cursed, in Jesus' name, and nothing about my life is a sentence You passed.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
