There is a list on the fridge door held up by a magnet shaped like a sunflower, and it is written in two different pens.
The first pen was Sunday. It is neat, because Sunday is when a person is organized and hopeful and has just made a plan. The second pen is Wednesday, and Wednesday's handwriting is smaller and lower down and crosses two things out.
Bread. Milk. Onions. The thing for the boy's school trip, which has been on the list for three weeks and moves down each time without ever coming off.
She stands in the aisle and does it in her head. Not with a calculator, because a calculator in an aisle looks like something, and she has spent a long time being careful about what things look like. She does it in her head, in pounds, rounding up, and she has got very good at it, and being very good at it is not a skill she ever wanted.
Nobody in that shop knows she does it. She is well turned out. She is polite to the girl on the till. She says the thing about the weather.
And a few months ago a man at the front of a room said something about people who are believing for more, and about how faith opens things up, and he did not mean anything by it, and it was not aimed at her. She put her coat on afterwards and said the nice thing to the person at the door and drove home. And somewhere on the way she found herself explaining to nobody, out loud in an empty car, that she had prayed. That she had. She really had.
She did not cry about the money. She cried about the sentence she had heard underneath it, which nobody had said, which was: this is a report on you.
You are safe here. And before we go one step further, I am going to put four things on the table and then keep to every one of them.
Nothing on this page will ever cost you anything, in any direction. There is no ask here, no doorway, no quiet line at the bottom. Not on this site, not ever.
I am not going to give you advice about money, because I do not know your situation and a stranger with a plan is a stranger playing with your week. I will say once, warmly: in most countries there are free, regulated services for exactly this, and there is help you may be entitled to, and using either of them is not a failure of faith. It is a grown person doing a sensible thing.
I am not going to tell you that being poor is beautiful, or holy, or good for you. It is not. It is grinding and it is unfair and I am not going to decorate it.
And I am not going to hand you a nice feeling instead of the thing you actually need. What is in this message is real and it is yours, and it is not a substitute for the school trip.
The sentence Paul wrote that has two halves and needs both
Paul is defending a ministry that looked, from the outside, like a failure. He runs through what he and his friends actually have. Beatings, hunger, sleeplessness, being written off. And then he lands on a line that has been carried by poor Christians for two thousand years.
As sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, yet possessing everything.2 Corinthians 6:10
Look at the shape of it. Every clause has two halves and Paul refuses to drop either one.
He does not say the poverty was not real. He does not say it turned out to be a blessing in disguise, or that it was making him into somebody, or that God had arranged it for a reason. He says: poor. Flatly. And then: possessing everything. Also flatly. Both, at once, in the same body, on the same day.
That is not a trick of the light. That is a man reporting two accurate facts about himself.
So now let me deal with the thing you actually came in carrying, which is not the arithmetic.
It is the sentence you heard underneath somebody else's sentence.
Hear this from me as plainly as I can say it. What you have is not a verdict on you. It is not a discipline. It is not a test God set. It is not a consequence of a prayer you did not pray or a belief you failed to hold or a thing you did wrong at twenty three. Nobody in heaven has looked at your situation and thought less of you, and nobody there has arranged it to teach you anything.
I want that stated once, without a single hedge on it, because you have been carrying the other version for months and it is a lie and it has done you harm.
And now the true half, which is yours and which nobody can means test.
You possess something. Not a feeling about possessing something. An actual possession, with your name on it, which does not appear anywhere in an account and cannot be taken by anybody. You are known by name by the God who made you. You are His, today, in the aisle, doing the sums. You have His attention now, not the version of you with a better month.
That is not a consolation prize handed to you because the real prize was unavailable. It is the thing everything else was always pointing at, and the difference is that you can find out it is true in a season when a lot of people never do.
If you have almost nothing this week, you are not nothing. You never were. You are a person of enormous weight walking down an aisle rounding up in her head.
And one thing said straight, because this weight can go dark quietly. If it has ever taken you to the thought that everyone would be better off without you, that is where a message stops and a human being starts. In the United States, call or text 988 and someone answers. Anywhere else, your local emergency number or crisis line. And tell one real person today, out loud. That is the bravest thing available and there is no shame anywhere near it.
Here is the turn, and it does not require one thing to change on that fridge door.
You are going to take hold of what is actually yours.
Not instead of the help. Alongside it. You keep asking, you keep applying, you keep telling the truth to whoever can actually assist you, and none of that is beneath a believer and none of it means anything about your faith. Do all of it, with your head up.
And underneath it, today, you take possession of a thing that has been yours the whole time and that you have been reading as a compensation. It is not a compensation. It is the estate.
Because you are in Christ, this is already yours, given to you rather than earned, and the authority you are about to exercise is His, carried in His name. What God does about your circumstances, and when, is His to decide, and He may answer in His own way and through the most ordinary means there are. What is settled right now, at this figure, is who you are while you wait.
Declare this over yourself
- Lack, you are a fact about my week and you are not a fact about me. The Word of God says having nothing, yet possessing everything, so I hold what cannot be counted, and it is mine today.
- Shame, get out of this flat, in the name of Jesus, because there is no verdict in an empty cupboard and there never was one. God, You are my Portion, and what You have given me is not a consolation, it is a possession.
- Ledger, you cannot see what I hold and you never could. The Word of God says I am poor and yet making many rich, therefore I am rich in Him today, at this figure, in this aisle. And I ask for every bit of help I need with my head up.
